UTS-Pro is a premium thermowood board.  It is especially used in exterior siding and cladding, but can also used in internal applications to produce durable visually beautiful surfaces.

Spruce thermowood stands out as an excellent choice for façades due to its impressive dimensional stability, resistance to harsh weather conditions, durability, and appealing aesthetics. Even in the most demanding climates, surface treatment is not always necessary, making it a genuinely sustainable option over its entire lifespan.

The better dimensional stability, resistance to rot, removal of the resin and overall better weather resistance are due to the themo-treatment. Thermo-treatment is a natural way of enhancing wood without the use of chemicals or other additives, only heat and water vapor. During the heating the wood also acquires a beautiful light brown color. If left untreated, the brown colour will be naturally weathered to grey over time when exposed to UV light. Therefore, the wood is well suited to living spaces and the production process itself is environmentally friendly, without harmful waste.

In general, spruce lumber is used in various products due to its strength, durability, and versatility.  It's known for its straight grain, light color, relatively uniform texture and ease of workability, making it a popular choice for structural applications. Furthermore, due to its good resistance to decay, it is a common material also in exterior applications, such as siding and cladding - both with thermo-treatment and without it.

Helsinki Wood thermowood is thermo-treated using the high-tech WDE Maspell patented solution, where the wood is treated under vacuum at 190-230 °C without the addition of chemicals. The closed environment ensures a well-controlled, stable and high-quality processing process that is more water and energy efficient and safer than conventional equipment.

During thermo-treatment, wood acquires many valuable properties:

  • Wood becomes more stable, durable and wear-resistant and deforms minimally.

  • The wood becomes lighter and easier to handle.

  • The moisture content of the wood decreases, as does the thermal conductivity, thanks to which it is especially suitable for hot and humid rooms.

  • Thermo-treatment furnishes wood with a beautiful brown colour and emphasises its texture. Depending on the degree of treatment and the type of wood, the shade may be darker or lighter.

Did you know: Spruce wood is highly prized for its use in making the soundboards of musical instruments, particularly acoustic guitars, violins, and pianos. The lightweight and resonant properties of spruce make it ideal for producing clear and vibrant tones.
